| INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE SPELLBOUND! SPELLING TUTOR |
+==============================================================+

+===================+
THE SPELLBOUND! SPELLING TUTOR IS SHAREWARE, NOT FREEWARE!
The SPELLBOUND! Spelling Tutor is not free. You are granted
a limited license of 7 days of free use so that you can evaluate
the program fully. If you continue to make use of the program
beyond the 7 days, you are required to purchase the program using
one of the 3 options outlined in SPELL.DOC. If after the 7 days
you decide not to purchase the program, you must remove all of
its files from your system, while you may continue to distribute
the original package to friends, BBSes, etcetera.
THE SPELLBOUND! SOFTWARE SUPER DUPER, NEW AND IMPROVED, ALL
PURPOSE SHAREWARE CURSE OR -- "WHO IS WELDON?"
To discourage use of the program beyond the 7 day evaluation
period, we been sadly (sigh), forced to employ the timeworn
device of "cursing" dishonest users of our product. For further
information, and for an answer to the burning question: "Who is
this Weldon guy, and what is his name doing in the
documentation?" see SPELL.DOC!
FULLY FUNCTIONAL, NOT DISABLED!
This shareware or evaluation copy of The SPELLBOUND! Spelling
Tutor has not been disabled in any way. All of the functions
available in the Registered version are fully functional in this
version. The only difference is the presence of the shareware
screens in the shareware version to remind you of your obligation
to register and not to use the program beyond the 7 day
evaluation period without registering.
INVOICE AND MAILER AUTOMATICALLY TOTALED AND PRINTED
To make the task of purchase completely painless, you will
be presented with a data entry screen as you exit the program
into which you may type all of the ordering information. From
this information, an invoice will be totaled and printed (or sent
to a file for further editing if you prefer). In addition, a
pre-addressed mailer containing your return address and the
address of SPELLBOUND! Software will be printed. Just answer all
of the questions from your keyboard, choose what printer port or
file to which it should be sent, assemble the simple mailer,
insert your check with the invoice, staple, stamp, and mail!
MasterCard and Visa are accepted.
IMMEDIATE CONVERSION TO REGISTERED VERSION BY PHONE!
If you have a MasterCard or Visa, you may have your copy
converted to the registered version immediately if you wish
simply by calling SPELLBOUND! Software at (517) 828-6520 with the
program running on your computer. We will give to you a special
code which when entered into the program will make the
conversion. Remote registration removes all of the shareware
screens as well as the termination screens. The cost is a
minimum $15.00 registration fee for this service. If you desire
the additional word lists or the latest version the charge is
slightly higher. See SPELL.DOC for further information on
registration.

PROBLEMS
If you have any problems while installing the program,
call SPELLBOUND! Software Customer Support at: (517) 828-6520.
We will be happy to help you to evaluate our program!
REQUIREMENTS FOR INSTALLATION
The SPELLBOUND! Spelling Tutor requires 384k free memory,
DOS 3.00 or above, CGA, EGA, or VGA monitor (or Hercules (R) card
with a CGA simulation program), two floppy disk drives OR one of
the following single drive systems: Hard drive, 720k floppy,
1.2meg floppy, 1.44meg floppy.
PRINTING THE DOCUMENTATION
To print out the documention for "The SPELLBOUND! Spelling
Tutor", install the program according to the directions given in
this documentation. Once you have started the program, press F1
to bring up context-sensitive help. Press F1 once again to bring
up the documentation in the file viewer. Press F9 to print the
file being displayed, in this case, SPELL.DOC. Enter your
parallel printer port number when prompted. Make sure you have
about 40 sheets of paper.
To print this file now, enter the following command from the
DOS prompt: COPY README.1ST PRN <Press ENTER>
PRINTING WITH THE BOTHSIDES TEXT FORMATTER
Even better, if you have SPELLBOUND! Software's "BothSides
Text Formatter", Just type: BOTH SPELL.DOC FF. When the
processing is finished, type: COPY SPELL.ONE PRN and when side
one is finished, turn the paper over, reinsert it into the
printer and type: COPY SPELL.TWO PRN. The documentation will
print to both sides of the paper. Instead of 40 sheets of paper,
you will only need 20!
READING THE DOCUMENTATION FROM WITHIN THE SPELLING TUTOR
To read the documentation online, Press F1 once to bring up
context sensitive help. While the help box is displayed, press
F1 once more. The file viewer will immediately display
SPELL.DOC. SPELL.DOC must be in the PROGRAM or DATA directory.
Press F9 to print it.
PREPARING THE INSTALL DISKETTE FOR INSTALLATION TO FLOPPY DISKS
The INSTALL program requires the availability of
"COMMAND.COM" (your command interpreter). If you do not have a
hard drive or you boot your computer from drive A:, you will need
to copy "COMMAND.COM" from your DOS "System" disk to the Spelling
Tutor installation diskette before proceeding with the
installation.
If installing to floppies, COMMAND.COM will be automatically
copied to your program diskette by the INSTALL program as well,
so that the transient portion of COMMAND.COM can be refreshed
when terminating the Spelling Tutor. This prevents the message,
"Insert disk with COMMAND.COM into drive A: and press any key".
This will enable you to make use of an external editor in
addition to allowing you to SHELL to Dos from within the program.
If in rare circumstances you are not using COMMAND.COM,
substitute the command interpreter for the operating system you
are using. If you are unsure, type: "SET" at the Dos prompt and
press ENTER. Look for the words: "COMSPEC=". The file name to
the right of the equal sign is the name and path to your command
interpreter.

+============================================================+
(1.) Format two blank floppy diskettes in the following manner:
Place your DOS diskette containing FORMAT.COM into drive A:
and a blank diskette into drive B:. Type "A:FORMAT B:" press
ENTER. This will be your PROGRAM diskette. When it is
finished, format another diskette in the same way. This
will be your DATA diskette.
(2.) Place the SPELLBOUND! diskette into drive A: and with the
blank formatted PROGRAM diskette still in drive B:, do the
following. Type: "A:INSTALL" press ENTER, read all of the
instructions and follow the prompts. Both destination
diskettes will be inserted into drive B: at the proper time.
(3.) If everything went okay, your program is now ready to run!
Place the PROGRAM diskette into drive A:, the DATA diskette
(containing SPELL.WDS, SPELL.DOC, etc. into drive B:, type:
"B:" (this will change you to drive B:) and then type:
"SPELL" and press ENTER.

+===============================================================+
(1.) Place the distribution diskette into drive A: and do the
following:
a: Type: "A:INSTALL" (without quotes) press ENTER.
b: Read all of the instructions, and follow the prompts. The
INSTALL program can make some very necessary changes to
AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS for you, or you can make them
yourself if you are leery of having installation programs
mess with your system. If you choose to have the program do
it for you, the original copies of your programs will be
backed up first, so the changes are reversible. If you have
the program make these changes for you, then skip step (2.).
(2.) Add the program directory to your PATH environment variable
in AUTOEXEC.BAT or at the DOS prompt. If you already have a
PATH statement in AUTOEXEC.BAT, then append a semicolon
before appending the directory. Example: PATH
C:\DOS;C:\UTIL;C:\WP;C:\SPELL If there is no PATH statement
in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, then you must enter the
following: (Assuming the PROGRAM files were installed in
"C:\SPELL") PATH C:\SPELL The PATH environment variable
tells DOS where to search for commands it cannot find in the
current directory. When you type "SPELL" from the DATA
directory, DOS will not be able to find SPELL.EXE in the
current directory. It will look through the directories
listed in the PATH statement.
IMPORTANT! If you have a hard drive system with a single
High density drive, you will first have to install to a
single directory on your hard drive, and then copy all the
files from that directory to the diskette.
+=====================================+
| Y O U R F I R S T S E S S I O N |
+=====================================+
To start SPELLBOUND!, make the data directory your current
directory. For example, if the data directory were
C:\SPELL\CLASSONE, you would type: "C:" press ENTER and then "CD
\SPELL\CLASSONE" press ENTER. When you have done this, type:
"SPELL" press ENTER, and the program will begin.
In your first session you will be presented with a couple of
questions. The first is whether students will have access to
functions which allow access to files or to the operating system.
The other is whether you would like password protection so that
students may only view their own records. Once installation is
finished, the only person who will be able to change these
settings is the person who logs on as "TEACHER". TEACHER must
always enter a password to gain entrance. If a student were
allowed to log in as teacher, he would be able to view other
students' passwords, print out reports of their progress
etcetera, so you may not disable password protection for the
TEACHER. To change these initial settings at any time:
(1.) Log in as TEACHER, and enter your password.
(2.) Press ESC while at the MAIN MENU
(3.) Key in "DEFAULT", then enter your "TEACHER" password again.
(4.) While logged in as "DEFAULT", set up the configuration as
you wish each new student to be configured the first time
on. You may even run the Spelling Tutor and change the
colors there. (Just press F1 in Spelling Tutor to see how
to do this.)
(5.) When the configuration is complete, either press F10 to quit
or return to the Login screen and log in under your own name
or "Teacher".
The configuration you create as default is saved to
DEFAULT.CFG in the program directory. This will be the initial
configuration each student will receive the first time he logs
in. If you have many classes (each class in its own directory),
this configuration will affect all classes.
